From late February through early April, farmers in nearly every hill town village in Massachusetts honor an old New England tradition. They take to the woods with buckets, tubing and drills to gather the sap from sugar maple trees, boiling it down to pure maple syrup. Sugaring is the first sign of the annual agricultural awakening. Old-man winter disappears in puffs of sweet steam from weather-beaten sugar houses. The warmth of the evaporator and the aroma of hot syrup contrast with the lingering chill outside. Sorry, we can't give a discount at this time of year, our busiest because the leaves are in all their glory...

Lathrop House B&B celebrates the holidays with complimentary car service from Springfield’s Amtrak or Peter Pan Bus, and to brighten your holidays still more, will drive you through Bright Nights in Forest Park! The 2009 season of Bright Nights fills Forest Park with more than 600,000 light bulbs of every color imaginable in 376-plus display pieces that will come to life in New England’s largest holiday lighting display, with a sparkling new display alongside longtime favorites such as Seuss Land, Jurassic World and Garden of Peace. . Consult the Bright Nights website at www.brightnights.org for details including Bright Nights’ latest addition - Santa’s Magical Forest illuminated with brightly colored trees, and elves serenading visitors on the way to Santa’s Cottage where the jolly ol’ elf will spend his nights until Christmas Eve welcoming all good little boys and girls.Also inside the cottage can be found souvenirs, holiday gifts, treats and other Bright Nights mementos. We’ll tune our radio to 98.5 FM for Bright Night’s own festival of music to enhance your visit. There are also horse-drawn wagon and carriage rides. Underground Railroad Adventure

Although the Lathrop House B&B in Springfield, Massachusetts was built in 1899 after the Civil War, it's location is perfect for visiting the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford CT. A tour of the Stowe House provides an intimate glimpse into the life of the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Also only a half hour away is the Connecticut Freedom Trail, a tour of buildings reported to have been used on the Underground Railroad, sites associated with the Amistad case of 1839-1842, and gravesites, monuments, homes, and other structures that represent the concept of freedom so cherished in the American mind. In celebration of Black History Month, The Lathrop House B&B offers a second night or second room free for February, 2010 bookings, as well as a 20 per cent discount throughout 2010 to all two-night or longer stay visitors who show a receipt from one of these historic sites visited when they stay with us.
